Most Frequently Asked Questions About Tutoring
1. How do I apply for tutoring?
Tutorial & Instructional Programs is located in SAC 1221. You may apply for a Tutor between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. You can also use our walk-in service.
2. How much does it cost?
Tutoring through Tutorial & Instructional Programs is free academic support services for Gallaudet students.
3. Tell me about the various services TIP provides.
Tutoring is available on a one-on-one and small group basis for students enrolled in most courses. Click here to find out how to get tutoring services. Walk-in services are provided in various subjects Click here to find out the schedule for walk-in services. Writing Advice for students working on papers for class or self-improvement is available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Thursdays and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays. Study Tables are available for students who want a study environment equipped with Tutors, resources, and a quiet study area. Click here for information on study tables. Math tutoring is available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Mondays - Thursdays and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays in SAC 2210.
4. What should I expect from tutoring?
A Tutor is not a substitute for your teacher. You are expected to attend class regularaly. For tutoring sessions read your textbook and complete as much of your homework as possible. Come to the session with questions about your reading assignment or homework that you did not understand. You should bring your textbook, class notes, old test papers, class handouts, etc.
5. How will I know when my tutoring session starts?
Tutorial & Instructional Programs staff will send you an email (we only use Gallaudet email addresses) with your name, the Tutor's name, the name of course, your assigned tutoring days, time, room assignment and tutoring start date. You are required to come to the TIP lab in SAC 1221 to meet your Tutor and sign in and out of all sessions.
6. Why do we have to sign in?
The Tutorial & Instructional Progams buget has to be justified by how well our services are used. The sign-in process helps us keep good records of usage of our services. In addition, the sign-in numbers tell us how students most use TIP so that we can make changes and better serve you.
7. Can I just walk-in anytime?
Yes, for selected courses, students can get walk-in, one-stop tutoring and advising. Tutorial & Instructional Programs offers a no-interview, no-application, no-waiting walk-in service for these courses during the regular academic year.

8. What should I do if I don't like my Tutor?
You should come in and discuss the situation with a TIP supervisor.
9. I need accommodations, what do I do?
Inform the staff during the intake interview that you wil need accommodations and explain the kind of accommodations needed.
10. Why are Tutors not allowed to help with take-home test?
In accordance with the Academic Honesty Policy established by Gallaudet University, Tutors/Writing Advisors are not permitted to assist students with tests.
11. Why aren't Writing Advisors allowed to edit or proofread papers?
If a Tutor or Writing Advisor edits or proofreads course work (and makes changes for the student), the student would not be presenting his or her own true work.
